Place the pumpkin pieces on a steamer rack over boiling water in a large pan, cover, and steam for about 30 - 45 minutes. Check after 30 minutes of vigorous steaming. Remove when the interior is soft, and cut, spoon, or scrape the pulp from the skin.
Purée Pumpkin in a food processor/blender or you can whip it with a hand mixer. Push the puree through a mesh strainer to remove any large chuncks.
Use the puree in savories recipes, soups, casseroles, pies, and desserts; or, for an accompaniment to meats and poultry, beat in a little butter and cream, and add a sprinkling of nutmeg, and salt and pepper to taste. Puréed pumpkin keeps well frozen.
