Put the ham into a large pot and cover it with cold water. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat. Simmer for 1-1/2 - 2 hours, depending on the size. A 5-pound ham cooks in 1-1/2 hours, an 8-pound ham in 2 hours. Add more water as it cooks away. When it is done, drain and remove the rind. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Place the ham on a rack in a shallow pan and bake for 2 hours.
