Ingredients
- 4 oz semisweet chocolate baking morsels
- 1/4 cup water
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter softened
- 4 whole u.s. grade a large egg at room temperature
- 3 cups all-purpose flour sifted
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1-1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° F. Place chocolate and water in a small saucepan, and heat over low heat until the chocolate is melted; cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the sugar and butter with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the chocolate mixture. Gradually add the flour, baking soda, buttermilk, and vanilla. Blend with the mixer at low speed until combined. Pour batter into three 9-inch nonstick round cake pans. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes and then remove the cakes from the pans.
- To decorate, spread frosting between each cake layer and on top, leaving sides unfrosted.
