Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow split peas or red lentils
- 2 cups water
- 1 whole small onion sliced
- 3/4 tsp minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon Minced fresh ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
- 1 cup water
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 2 whole serrano chilies or jalapeƱo peppers seeded and finely chopped
- 1 whole plum tomato diced
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro
- 2 - 3 cups cooked rice
Instructions
- Rinse, pick over, and place in a large saucepan the pea or lentils. Add 2 cups water, onion, garlic, finger, and turmeric. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, covered, until the legumes are tender, 20 to 25 minutes.
- Stir in 1 cup water and salt. Simmer, partially covered, until the dal is thickened to the consistency of split pea soup, about 20 minutes.
- Stir in peppers, tomato, and cilantro.
- Serve with cooked rice.
